I think your trainer is just to damn lazy to work with you on them. It really doesnt take much flexibility to pick weight off the floor properly. Now if your talking OH Squats then yes flexibility plays a huge part.

Let me re-nig a bit on what I just said....it could possibly be a flexibility issue, but if so you are one of the very few that it effects deadlifts.

I'd stick with your first. Sure it takes a bit of flexibility, but its not a power clean.
OP:
Most of the time it is a form issue. If you can't flex to properly perform a deadlift then I don't know what to tell you because you're probably screwed in all aspects of life.

I'd bet anything this was a form problem and has nothing to do with flexibility.

Yep its all about form. Im 6'5" and can deadlift with no problems.
