Walking and Diet

Hey, so I'm obviously new to the forums. I have attempted several times over the past few years to build a habit of workouts and dieting, but it is always simple will-power that gets in my way.

However, given my likely enlistment prior to college, this time i know i will follow through with a plan.

I have it in mind to ditch some extra fat pounds and then start building more muscle (my end goal is not to be a "strong-man", simply to have the neccesarry strength i would need in the army--and some muscle tone is always nice too )

My question is, for the first step (shedding the extra weight), is simple excercise as long as i keep pace/heartrate up enough?
Ex: Is a two hour walk every other day (or a one hour every day) or every other afternoon playing basketball for a few hours (or paintball on the weekends) enough to get me started in that direction? Obviously i am going to combine it with better nutrition and water rather than sodas.

Any input or advice? Thanks

Re: Walking and Diet

I've been working with 3 people over the last year who need to lose a significant ammount of weight. One was a lady who weighed around 350. She was a single mom and lived in a trailer park. She would walk every evening and cut out carbohydrates from many of her meals. That walk turned into a longer walk. Then at work, she would almost jog everywhere she went. I taught her ways to eat less, while feeling full. I would then train her in a circuit with weights. Light weight, high activity, little rest. She has lost nearly 100 lbs. over that time. She continues to lose weight. I think she's down to 240 now.

So, yes, if you want to lose weight, you should keep consistent. Daily. Even if it's just a little bit. Then slowly add more time and intensity to your walk until it becomes a jog. Also, yes, a two hour walk every other day, a one hour every day,or every other afternoon playing basketball for a few hours is a great start, and a great way to lose the weight you want.

Ok, thanks very much. I know i can spend some time playing pick up games with friends and i'm going to start walking (probably with my dog, haha) hopefully tomorrow, so, thanks for your input.
