Slimming Drug Safety Probe

Shit...I've seen this stuff on sale, know people who are trying it...

Quote:
Authorities in the US are investigating concerns that a popular slimming drug widely available in the UK could be linked to liver damage.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that is it reviewing complaints reported by the users of the weight loss medication orlistat, which is sold as the over-the-counter drug Alli.

It follows more than 30 reports it has received of serious liver injury in patients, six of which resulted in organ failure. The FDA stressed that to date a link has not been established. Manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline reassured users that there is no evidence of a connection to liver damage.

Alli is currently available to dieters without the need for a prescription from their GP. Since going on sale at UK pharmacies in April, around 200,000 people have purchased the drug,

Tablets are available to adults deemed to be overweight - with a body mass index (BMI) of 28 or over - following a brief consultation with a pharmacist.

The drug works by absorbing around a quarter of the fat from food, preventing it being turned into extra pounds by the body.

It was aimed at helping some of the 24% of UK adults now classified as obese.

But concerns have since been raised over the medication's possible side-effects.

The FDA said the most commonly reported adverse reactions included the yellowing of skin or whites of the eyes, weakness and stomach pain.

Between 1999 and 2008, the agency received 32 reports of liver damage, thirty of which occurred outside the US. Of these 27 resulted in hospitalisation.
WTF are they playing at???

Re: Slimming Drug Safety Probe

Although I am not a fan of the whole Alli thing, I dont think the problem is the drug itself. My guess is it will turn out to be the same as the whole Hydroxycut problem. These dumbass people that keep using more than the directions say to take. I think it is a case of the "more is better" mentality coming back to haunt the idiots praciting this frame of thought with medication.

But the point of the entire thing is: LOW FAT DIETS ARE FUCKING CRAP!

Cut out the carbs. This drug is for lazy bastards that have no fucking clue what they are doing. Pay a nutritionist before taking these stupid fat blockers.

People shit themselves on alli taking the recommended dosage from eating steak for god's sake. Morbidly Obese people should be given a single bullet...no, wait, about 5 bullets and a padded room. There should be an ultimatum, lose weight or you no longer get access to anything outside of what you can buy with your own money. No insurance, no government help, NOTHING! Your money runs out and you haven't made any improvement? Oh well, too bad for you, goodbye!

Re: Slimming Drug Safety Probe

I think a lot of the problem is mental attitude towards them.

As a reformed fatty myself, people indulge you because they think you have some kind of mental anguish from your past, or they think you're suffering some kind of trauma which makes you put on weight, or it's "your glands". I mean seriously, wtf?

No actually, it's the FOOD they stuff into their mouths! I mean, holy shit...

Re: Slimming Drug Safety Probe

The irony is the FDA banned ephedra, which actually works. The US government also banned anabolic steroids, which can be used safely.

But cigarettes can be bought at any convenience store.

Yes, I'm cynical about the government.
