Rep Power: 52799 | Osteoporosis. Basically this runs in my family, and I've had enough of seeing female members suffering with it.
I don't want to get it, and I know prevention NOW (I'm 28) is far better than trying to fix it later on down the line.
I have about two and a half pints of semi skim milk a day, eat natural yogurt and low-fat cheeses, and I know lifting weight helps, but what else can I do to ensure I build bone mass as well as keep it?
Is there anything I can do to optimise calcium uptake (eating it isn't any good if I'm not absorbing it, obviously)? |

Rep Power: 100796 | your body will only absorb what calcium it needs, store a little, and flush out the rest. your parathyroids will alert your body when you are in need of more calcium and will release a hormone telling your body to release a little more. people without their parathyroids (like me) do have to take supplements (tums, rolaids, etc) when their calcium gets low because out only indication of low calcuim is numbness in out lips and fingertips when it is already too late.
one of the main ways to prevent osteoperosis is to use resistance training. it seems that training is the best preventative medicine for may illnesses and aging processes. it's what i call "the fountain of youth."
resistance training strenghtens bones and helps make them more dense. training is about all you can do to delay/prevent osteoperosis.
keep doing what you're doing and be consistant. i bet your grandmother didn't lift weights when she was younger and that would be a good reason for her osteoperosis not being prevented. |

Rep Power: 100796 | and the tablets work if you need the extra supplementation. you are not going to feel different or feel anything if you body is not low on calcium and doesn't need extra at the moment. |

Rep Power: 52799 | Thanks for the help, some green coming your way.
Sarah, that link had something in there about spine fractures - my nan on my dad's side had one of those humps, and she lost about four inches in height in about six months - the doctor said she had bad posture and gave her an ointment for her neck because that's where the pain was. I also remember once she walked into a door and fractured her wrist in three places from the impact.
That's quite disturbing to read, actually. :\ I think I might also see my doctor and get some MRI of my bones done after I hit menopause or whatever a few years from now, just to check. |
