Mind and Muscle

Mind and Muscle
by wala

Anyone ever realised that when they're feeling really good with themselves (for whatever reason) that you goto the gym feeling better and in the mood a lot more? Futher still, your workout is a lot more productive than usual and you get an extra pump and are able to lift your heaviest and even further?

Its all because the mind is a very powerful tool for working out.

Most Arnie fans will know that he regularly visited psychologists to understand how he could use his mind as an extra aid in the gym and to help him achieve his goals. (which he has done immensely!)

Fact is, if you have a good, positive, strong will to succeed in building muscle, you're more likely to get what you want.

Personally, on a day when I'm due to go the gym at night after work, I'll be thinking about it all day! I'll go through my workout in my head, have it in my head what I'm gonna try and lift and how many reps I'm gonna be doing... Before I'm there I'm already thinkin about how productive tonight's workout will be! This helps me so much!

It's like when you look forward to a holiday, you dont just get there and then decide what your gonna do - you plan what you would like to do each night your away, you know in advance that your holiday will be very enjoyable and will give you good feelings... It pretty much the same for me each day when I'm gonna be working out!

The more you think about how good it is to be going the gym, the more you'll get out of it and have a great, positive workout!

Some guys that go my gym, go there in a bad mood, in a 'I can't be bothered tonight' mood... and it SHOWS! Maybe half way through its 'I'm not with it tonight' or 'I'm gonna pack up early tonight, dont seem to have the energy'..... I see that alot..

SO, remember how important it is to actually WANT to go the gym and think about why your actually going and how good its gonna be when you finally reach a particular goal.....

It is truly as much mental game as it is physical. You mind can make your body do so many things that seem impossible, if you have the right attitude.

I totally agree Wa.

Before you even get to the gym if your in a bad mood the workout is doomed right there before the start.

They also say that its your mind that holds you back when lifting. That your body can do a whole lot more but its your mind that prevents it.

That's my problem that I'm trying to work on mentally. To push past barriers. Like when training legs if I get a burn I drop the weight and stop, but what they say is I have to love the burn and push for more.

Also how come I can always lift more when I train with someone then by myself.

One thing I find absolutely incredible, is how much the mind is the reason behind what you do.

12 weeks ago, I wasn't a positive thinker, everything always got on top of me and I sometimes got into trouble because I just didn't have the right thought patterns going on. I rarely worked out, kept putting it off, and it showed.

At the start, I was just doing it "because", going through the motions because I was supposed to, and after about six weeks I started noticing a change.

I held myself differently, carried myself differently, and felt so much more confident in myself that, even though the outside hadn't changed that much, the inside had. I started to purposely put myself outside my own comfort zone to see whether I could handle it, and I could!

Now, I'm not "I can't", I'm "How can I go about...?"

Every time I get into that gym now, I get a buzz like never before. I'm not just dreaming of getting big lifts, I'll get them because I can't see me failing at them. It's not a case of I just don't want to listen when I'm told differently, just that I KNOW I can get that 350 squat, same as I KNOW I have blonde hair.

It's all mental, I know that now, and I also know that BECAUSE I know it, nothing can hold me back. I've just started treading the journey of reaching my own potential, and it's exhilarating.

Found it! I knew I had an article about mental thinking in there somewhere... (hey come on, I have well over 2000 emails in my Inbox, gimme a break lol)

There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.

Cheating to get ahead might get you the grade or promotion, but in the long run it really sets you back. Intelligence, creativity, hard work, and solid character--the things that propel you forward--are not fostered by taking the easy way out.

You don't earn anything by short-cutting your work. You're only cutting your potential short.

Sure you might feel relieved that a stressful task has passed, but an undeserving sense of relief doesn't compare to the gratification of knowing that you completed your own work.

If something in your life is difficult, meet it head on and earn the satisfaction of earning a job well done--with honesty and integrity.

I have loads of these little snippets of mental attitude...sometimes when I feel like I can't be bothered, I'll read one and it'll make me go anyway.
