I'm not 100% sure, but it's where the pain is. It doesn't hurt or feel tender until my knee is fully extended supporting my lower leg and foot. And I know it's not my patellar tendon, I'm REAL familliar with mine... I spraned it about a year ago. Damn.. I'm injury prone....
I know how I did it too... when I do my volleyball serves, I step with my left foot when i hit the ball and drag my right foot at the toe.
GRRR!!! And I love playing volleyball too. It's my cardio. it sure beats the treadmill!
edit: i'm an ex-gymnast, so my body has a lot of wear and tear on it.
Sit in a chair, relax your leg and have a friend grab behind your knee and do a quick short tug forward. It won't hurt so don't fret. If the lower leg moves forward at all go to the Dr. You have to be completely relaxed or your hammy w/ hold the leg in place. again it will NOT hurt.
BG, the test didn't move my knee, but the pain has gotten a tad worse this afternoon when i straighten and extend my leg with no support under my foot. this can't be good....
it hurts when it's fully extended wtihout a bend at my knee.
When my lower leg went too far foward while playing football many years ago, I think I strained the patellar tendon. I'm not sure if the damage was permanent, because soon after I picked up some cartilage damage from a heavy impact to the same knee and that masked the original injury. It was never serious enough for any action to be taken, but it's bad enough that it limits what I can do with exercise.
I get problems with lateral rotation of the knee (suggesting ACL or PCL), if it goes too far it gives me a bad knee for a week, as well as over-extension causing problems. Or simply exercise volume, too much causes my knee to sort of seize up the following day and I can't walk, but then it might suddenly go back to normal for a while, then go back bad and this is over the course of a few minutes.
When I fully flex the knee, the patella pops over the cartilage and something moves position which sometimes can help unseize the joint and make it feel free again, but sometimes can make it worse. Basically it now seems as if my knee is too tight, so maybe I damaged the meniscus and it remodelled and doesn't now fit the shape of my knee.
i think it's looking like more of a partial tear. it's gotten a tad worse.

Studies indicate that women in jumping and cutting sports such as football, basketball, or volleyball, are significantly more prone to ACL injuries than men; this is generally believed to be due to differences between the sexes in knee joint anatomy such as the intercondylar notch and/or ligament size and strength, ligament laxity, general muscular strength, reaction time of muscle contraction and coordination, and possibly training techniques (a new study suggests hormone-induced changes in muscle tension associated with menstrual cycles may be an important factor [1]).
(see bold) volleyball, i think that's how i injured it monday night.
I think might have to drop out of the strength competition due to this.
