Rep Power: 100796 | my pitbull at 10 months old! Ok, so I've been off work all week (will find out next friday if I'm going to be laid off or not) and I've had absolutely nothing to do. I've filled out job applications online for the past 2 days straight and I'm sick of being asked stupid questions. So, I got out the camera this afternoon and took some pictures of my Tucker.
She's ready to pounce!!!
A face only a mother could love: |

Rep Power: 100796 | Re: my pitbull at 10 months old! thanks quick! she's about as big of a baby as they come. She's really gentle with people, but if another dog comes into the yard, she acts like she's ready to tear it's head off. (she's in a fence, so she can't.)
Technically she's my 3 year old's dog.... but I claim her as mine. |

She's tested about every day for temperment. I take food away from her, play with her food bowl while she's eating, etc. like I do our other dogs. She's pretty obedient too at the moment too. |

If they're handled good, with minimal aggression shown toward them or shown by them, they should be okay. But like BG said, always keep your eye on them. Right now mine's only 10 months old, so she's still a big baby, but when she gets 2+, we're going to have to keep a closer eye on her with our son.
She's in a pen with a terrier mix and a basset hound, so right now she's the smart one of the bunch. They all get along and play but sometimes she plays a little rougher than they want to.
From what I understand, the vast majority of their temperment issues are over dominance. They say it's better to get them when they're a few weeks old if you have other dogs. This way they learn their place fairly early as opposed to getting a 6+ month one that is accustomed to where it is in the dominance area. They say it cuts down on fighting and aggression if they're kept with other dogs that aren't known for aggressive behavior.
Seriously, spend the $10 on a decent pitbull book/magazine and it'll give you a little insight into how to keep them. But, don't put it in the fence with an fairly old dog that just wants to lay around all day. Pits are high energy and need another dog to release some of it. This way they can run around and play all day long together and be wiped out by the end of the day.
Our pit and terrier are like twins. They play all day long, running, chasing each other, etc. If you separate them, they're lost without each other. The terrier is about 2.5 years old and the basset is around 4.

A lot of dogs are like that where they are great around you and the family but agressive towards other animals. You're right. It is a dominance thing. You also mentioned that she is dominant to the other dogs. That goes to show that she thinks she is the pack leader and that includes over you. The best thing to do is to take control in situations where she is taking control. Walk all of the dogs together is another good starter. Once they learn to operate as a pack they become less agressive because they realize you are the pack leader. Plus Pits are high energy dogs and need at LEAST 45-60 minutes of walking each day. |

Boki you know nothing of the breed, so unfortunately I place you in that group. You get a dog for the breed. Whatch gonna do when you go to college in a few years....Oh mom and dad can care for it.
These are wonderful animals, BUT you need to know everything about them FIRST!!!! sdb is doing all she can which is great, But it's still a pitbull. Like the dogs that are half wolf half dog. They were big in CO until they turned on the 1/2 wolf part. |
