This experiment is one of a growing number of studies which suggest that pornography changes the attitudes and behaviour of those who use it. And in the real world, these are not just a few dirty old men in raincoats.

They gave a sample of college students varying levels of exposure - either 'massive', 'intermediate' or none at all - to explicit pornography which was nonviolent but depicted women in degrading or subordinate roles. Following this, the students were asked to do several psychological tests, including the rape trial re-enactment described above. Men who had not watched the films suggested sentences of 7 years 11 months on average, while those in the massive exposure group sentenced the rapist to only 4 years 2 months.
The researchers assessed the students' sexual callousness towards women using a questionnaire which included an evaluation of statements such as, 'A woman doesn't mean no unless she slaps you', and, 'A man should find them, fool them, fuck them and forget them'. Students in the massive exposure group had significantly higher callousness scores than those who had seen no pornography. Massive exposure also led men to give higher estimates for the proportion of people who practise group sex, sadomasochism or bestiality and to adopt more liberal attitudes towards the censorship of pornography.

I find them abhorrent and a disgrace to us as a society. | I hear what you're saying...I didn't really mean S&M with the dominant/subordinate part, just the whole role sex takes in society of the dude "banging" the girl, and the girl "getting banged"...like, there's obviously the mechnics of sex that might explain some of that, but in the one-night-stand scene, it often seems like the girl is getting things (plain old sex, nothing fancy) done TO HER by the guy, rather than mutual sexin', ya know?
Child sex is a clear wrong, someone is getting hurt...I'm much less against "bestiality"---Labeling it a crime kind of gives human rights to an animal. Like, the animal didn't consent, but it can't "not consent" either...it's an animal! We own them. I'm sure the cow in the slaughtering house WOULD NOT consent to the inevitable bash over the head/electricution/throat slash or whatever method they use to process (murder?) them now...And i eat steak. If the animal gets "raped" by some weirdo, then he clearly gets murdered by the farm (no law against that). I just think it's one of those 'anti-creepy' laws we have many of...people don't want to see/hear about it, so the law is made and easily passed. Having said that, if you're attracted to animals, don't talk to me haha. But i won't throw you in jail for it. There's my weird argument for the day  | |
