Balancing Nutrition with workout

First off, sorry if this is redundant tread but I haven't been able to quite find the answers from the others Ive read.

I'm 5'7" and 148-151lbs

Ive really been debating on which situation is better.
I tried doing a 3000 calorie diet for about a month with great gains, (I gained about 8lbs) but I started gaining some extra fat weight along with that, even when I'm watching my fat intake. The proportions im taking in are about Carb 40%/Protein 40%/ Fat 20%

I tried cutting down to 2500 calories, but I almost didn't see any gains then.

So i guess my question is

What do you think is better? Going through these bulking and cutting phases? or is there a plan or way of eating that would promote a relative good muscle growth rate without putting on fat weight.
I like to be able to see my abs but still gain some good muscle growth (is that practical?)

Hey Melee check out this article TESTOSTERONE NATION

Also don't be afraid of fat. Fat doesn't make you fat. I actually leaned out more when going more on a 40p, 30c, 30f diet.

I say post up some pitcures so people can help you out a bit better. WHen bulking youre going to gain fat. I dont think that fat intake makes you fat (assuming youre eating good fats) Try eating 2800 cal and see how that goes.

I didn't bother looking at the article, I which one it will be... and it's an excellent.

Basically, you can end up with the perfect diet for YOU - all that is needed is time and experimentation... As the guys have said, add and reduce different macros to get a level thats right for you.
