How to get started in strongman?

Hi guys. I've had an interest in strongman since I first watched WSM on tv a few years back, but I never knew what to do in terms of lifting, equipment, etc. Right now, I've got a good amount of money I made over the summer, and I think I would like to start maybe getting some equipment to introduce myself to the sport. If any of you know of a good place to do so, or if any of you could give me some advice on what I should do in terms of lifting/conditioning just to get started in strongman, I would appreciate it.

I've heard that the tyre flip is one of the best, but I can just imagine the looks you'd get flipping one of those round the block.

Aside from that, I'll leave it to the guys who actually know what they're talking about LOL

I'm also curious to know this, I'd like to do one sometime in the future.

Re: How to get started in strongman?

Try and find a coach who specialises in this sort of stuff.

Untill then just work on more functional movements in the gym:

Farmers walks
Sled dragging
Sandbag work (basically do regular movements with a sandbag).
Kettlebells

Work on fullbody strength with movements like:

Squats
Deadlifts
Turkish Getups
Overhead Squats

Maybe some cleans if you know the correct form (dont do them unless you have been really coached on them).

You'll need a really strong grip aswell.

Re: How to get started in strongman?

A lot of gear you can build yourself with stuff from Home Depot or Lowes: Axle, sled, farmers, frame, heavy sandbags (200-300#), chain yoke (google it)**, etc...

Other stuff you can find free or dirt cheap: Heavy (600+) tires (google "ontario strongman tire weight" - 1st link)**, kegs, stones (big field stone will work) etc...

Check out this website: Ontario Strongman**

**Sorry - I would have posted the links for you but I have to make 15 post before I am allowed to do url's....
