Anyway you have to do the overhead press for definate - easily the best compound movement for the shoulders as it hits the front and lateral heads. You can also use a fair bit of weight as well, be that with a barbell or two dumbbells, it's totally upto you.
Lateral raises, where you raise the weight up to your sides like you're flying almost, are good for the lateral head so it gives a bit of roundness of the shoulders from the side. Remember to keep strict form and you will have to start of light because of the mechanics of the exercise.
Front raises are another option where you take a hammer grip with two dumbbells and you raise the weight in front of you upto eye level. It hits the front head but if you're doing any benching then i really wouldn't bother cause the front head gets hit all the time anyway.
Reverse flyes are good for hittin your rear or "posterior" delts at the back of your shoulders. Basically you bend over like your doing a row and then raise both weights to the side until they're parallel to the ground. Again strict form and go light as this exercise isn't easy at first. Once you can feel it at the back of your shoulders then you're doing it right.
I'm sure there are like a billion others but i've done these ones before and...they're pretty good
Just make sure you overhead press at least when doing shoulders! |

Its not so much the exercises you should be looking at but tempo, reps, sets, ri's....mixing those things up constantly are really important! |

Oh well, I agree with Malley. My front delts were lagging a little bit last year so I started getting a little more serious with my Military Presses instead of front raises. |

That's what I do. Just different angles. Some cable, some laying on a steep incline face down, Seated, bent overs. Then some presses if your shoulders are young. |

Rep Power: 0 | Re: tips for shoulder exercises The following exercises show examples of moves targeting the shoulders -- the front, middle and rear deltoids as well as the rotator cuff muscles. Choose a variety of exercises to target each part of the shoulders for a well-rounded routine. Click on the pictures and links to view detailed instructions or to see a larger picture. To work these exercises into a routine:
* Beginners: Choose 1 to 2 exercises, 1 to 2 sets of 12 to 16 reps
* Inter/Adv: Choose an exercise from each column for 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps, resting between sets
* Use enough weight that you can ONLY complete the desired number of reps
Overhead Presses
Overhead presses work the major muscles of the shoulder, with a focus on the middle deltoid and tricep. To do a basic overhead press, stand (or sit) holding weights with elbows bent and hands at eye level. Push weight over head without arching the back and lower back to start.
Front, Side, Rear Raises
Front, side and rear raises target each part of of the shoulders as well as the upper back. When doing shoulder raises, only lift the weight up to shoulder level. When doing rear flies, lead with the side of the hand and imagine you're making a smiley face as you lift the arms up.
Rotations/Upright Rows
Shoulder rotations work the rotator cuff and usually require smaller range of motion and light weight to avoid injury. Upright rows work the middle deltoid as well as the upper back and bicep muscles. If you have shoulder problems, you may want to avoid these exercises. |
