Hey guys I wonder when you squat, do you place your heels on the ground or on weigh plates or something else that is about 1 inch thick to stabilize your squat? I do squats with heels on the ground nowatimes but I've seen a lot of pros using weightplates (Milos Sarcev) and planks (Arnold) to help stabilizng. Where do you place your heels?
If you're not too flexible then placing your heels on plates allows for greater ROM because you can squat lower. I did this when I started out 6 months ago but now my flexibility has improved and I don't need them anymore.
I'm surprised Arnie needed to do this, he was lifting for years so you would have thought that his flexibility was perfect, maybe he had an injury when he used plates.
theres lots of different reasons for using a plate/1" thick wood.
i know a lot of guys that use it and they says its for comfort. i personally dont use anything. as squat200 said, it could also be for flexibilty reasons or through injury.
So, unless theres a reason to do use a plate, stick to whats natural - and thats putting a hefty weight behind your neck and squating!!
It can work well for those who are taller. Taller lifters tend to lean forward a little when squatting. Putting a 5 or 10 pound weight under your heel can assist in keeping your upper body erect during the squat. One of the downfalls is that it can take away from the ammount of weight you can lift. I like using this technique on front squats.
Most of us "cheat" a bit by wearing trainers which give the heel perhaps an inch. I wouldn't like to try squats in bare feet or something like flip flops - for the record I don't own flip-flops LOL.
