Joe the Powerlifter

I've told all of you before that I work out in a powerlifting gym. Those of you who watch my videos on Full Circle Muscle and Fitness can see that. I remember years ago, when I was going to squat 315 for the first time, big Joe spotted, encouraged, and supported me. Big Joe squats around 700 pounds. He looks Samoan, but he's not. In fact, if you mistakenly call him Samoan, he'll kick your ass for ya! I think he's Micronesian or something. I've never had the bravery to ask him! Anyway..... great guy.

I just saw him in the gym the other day and thanked him for his support through the years. We havent seen eachother in a few years now. He was surprised at my size and swole when he saw me. He told me that I looked great. It was a very humbling thing to hear one of my mentors compliment me on my size when I look up to HIS size. I told him that he was my inspiration in powerlifting, and there is one statement that me made to me when I went on to squat 365 for the first time that changed my mind forever when it came to lifting heavy weight.

The statement is:"What? are you scared of the weight? It's just weight! Don't be scared of it."

It's not a profound statement, but it stuck with me. Lifting heavy weight can be intimidating. But you need to remind yourself that it's just weight. You are the force to be recconed with. Not the weight.

Let me pass on the statement to you. I believe that there are people here who, if you were in the gym with Wala, Quick, Big Guns, and myself....... all of us together in a session in the gym...... that you would be setting new PR's all day! You would lift heavier and heavier weight because you would be around people who are lifting heavy weight. The intimidation would be lowered. You would feel confidently compelled to lift heavier.

So....... go do it. Lift heavier weight and become stronger, and therefore, bigger. And become that person who is being watched and admired by some newb. in the gym corner. Nobody watches and admires the guy doing curls with the 35 lb. dumbells. Nobody cares about the guy doing squats with 185. Put some weight on the bar! You want to be admired?, then do something that most others dont do because they lack the courage and mental fortitude to try. .......And after a while, you'll have people stopping you in the gym and asking what supplements you take! You'll have people asking you for tips. And maybe one day, someone will come up to you and express how you inspired them to step up their game.

...... Muscle isn't given out benevolently. It requires that you work hard and sacrifice.

Bull....everyone watches me curl 35 pounders 'cause I look damn good doing it !!!

Love this post. All of this is a mental game. Biking is a huge mental game. Squatting is huge mental. "Damn this feels heavy".....FAILURE!! It's supposed to feel heavy. If you want to squat 315....put 405 on the bar and just lift it off and stand for a short while. Let your mind adjust to the shock. When you put 315 on....it will be light. Power lifters do this quite often while training for comps.

back when we would squat 315 for 20 after the squat routine....I would put on some angry metal....go mental....block all pain out and go 'til I saw stars and went for more. Oh, I may pass out....Big F'ing deal. I'm in the squat cage, so what if you puke. If you haven't seen stars, gotten light headed, puked or been nautious for hours after doing legs......you didn't train!

Great post CM

Re: Joe the Powerlifter

Yeah, after lifting all these years, I'm just now getting to the place where I can actually pace myself and not get sick EVERY leg workout!
