QUICK QUESTION ON ABS

Hey guys,

Should abs be trained everyday or do they need rest??

I train 4 days a week and spend at least 15-30 minutes doing ab routines at the end of every session, and in between to mix it up.

Here is my routine;

mon: chest, tri & abs

tue: back, bi & abs

wed: rest/cardio

thur: shoulders & abs

fri/sat: legs/cardio

sun: rest

Any advice or tips would be much appreciated.

Abs are just another muscle group...

Treat them as you would your chest, you wouldnt train your chest every day. Would you? Your abs do need rest too...

Train them once or twice per week & Train them hard.

If your looking to make them visible its all about your nutrition.

As the saying goes "Abs are made in the kitchen".

So train them hard to build up muscle and get your nutrition on track to make them visible.

Visible abs are definitely a result of low body fat.

I think they can be trained more than once a week since they are smaller muscles and composed of mostly slow twitch (endurance) fibers. But I'd recommend some weighted work for abs--helps build your core strength for squats, etc.

Experiment and see what works for you.

should abs be trained in 3 sets..10-12 reps like any othe rmuscle? versus 100 crunches.

If you're bulking just do them once a week because you won't see them with the added fat. When you are ready to cut do them twice a week with weight as many here have said.

abs are all about diet and if your deading and squatting they will indirectly be worked all the time

Hey Fatboy, How are you doing?
Abs are just like any other muscle group and have to be trained accordingly, with the right amount of rest.
Abs are essentially stabilizing muscles for the whole body and are actually worked durring most exercises you perform.
The last thing you want to do are direct ab exercises everyday.
To get your abs to show as a 6 pack, you need to reduce your amount of body fat...stripping away the layer of fat will show the underlying ab muscles.
To do this you have to do a certain amount of cardio. (though not too much or you will lose muscle)
You will also need to pay attention to what you eat.
I have recently written an article on how to gain great stomach muscles and a 6 pack.
